XP Maximized: Microsoft's October 11th Security Patch Reveals Threat Probability

On October 11th Microsoft announced a security hole and subsequently released a remedy patch called MS05-051. As part of its Tuesdays Patch Release Microsoft included 8 security updates. Are these security patches important to you? In a word, YES. If you use Windows XP and you have not upgraded to Service Pack 2 shame on you, you are VERY vulnerable. If you use Windows 2000, XP, and other versions install MS05-051 to protect against the "on its way" malware.

Service Pack 2

Industry experts warn that the hole as announced by Microsoft is "very easy" to exploit. Security-software companies are already issuing updates, McAfee and Internet Security Systems, and other vendors indicated they will soon bring out their own updates.

One sinister aspect is a hacked .avi media file can silently and effectively infect Windows users who play it, even users of XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003. MS05-050 fixes this.
